Grandfather Mountain's Mile-High Swinging Bridge is the highest suspension footbridge in America. This 228-foot structure spans an 80-foot chasm at an elevation of one mile (5,280 feet) above sea level. Originally constructed in 1952 at a cost of $15,000 to allow access to Linville Peak, the bridge was replaced with a more modern version in 1999 at a cost of $300,000.
