“After two days of steady rain, a slow-moving low pressure system completed an overnight departure from the Pisgah, Balsam and Great Smoky Mountains. Waterrock Knob’s 6,292-foot summit was accompanied only by a starlit sky upon my arrival before dawn. Above the moisture-filled woodlands below, I eagerly awaited sunshine’s wake-up call. Out of total darkness, the subtle outlines and gentle shapes of cross ranges and mountain slopes began to slowly appear, donning their version of Carolina Blue.”
