“The Plunge Basin Trail descends sharply through Linville Gorge National Wilderness Area and to the base of Linville Falls. Though views of this waterfall are quite dramatic from overlooks along the upper rim, nothing prepares you for the sheer size and thunder of water crashing into the valley floor encountered upon arrival into the plunge basin. So rugged is the Linville River, referred to by Cherokee Indians as Eeseeoh, meaning ‘river of cliffs,’ that it overwhelms your senses and unleashes a sensation of Running Wild.”
