Description
Great Smoky Mountains National Park features an historic preservation of Southern Appalachian mountain culture that has earned the park designation as a World Heritage Site. One of the Smokies most popular areas is Cades Cove, a lush valley surrounded by mountains that is home to many historic buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Scattered throughout the cove are a grist mill, three churches, and a collection of log homes, outbuildings and barns, including the Carter Shields Cabin where George Washington “Carter” Shields, a Civil War veteran, lived from 1910-1921.
