Description
With an elevation of 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell marks the highest point in America east of the Mississippi River. Part of the Black Mountain range, Mount Mitchell has been designated as a National Natural Landmark and an International Biosphere Reserve. A steep, 980-foot paved trail leads through a conifer forest to the summit, where an observation tower completed in January 2009 provides panoramic views. Mount Mitchell State Park was established in 1915 as North Carolina’s first state park, and is accessible from the Blue Ridge Parkway near mile marker 355.
