San Juan National Historic Site - Book of 17 Postcards
Description
The San Juan National Historic Site is composed of Castillos San Cristóbal, San Felipe del Morro, and San Juan de la Cruz (also called El Cañuelo), plus bastions, powder houses, and three-fourths of the city wall that surrounds the old, colonial portion of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Built by Spanish troops beginning in 1539 with a tower at El Morro, these defensive fortifications took more than 250 years to complete, and represent the oldest European construction in the United States. Dominating the Caribbean landscape for over four centuries, these historic structures are now protected as the San Juan National Historic Site which, in 1983, received designation by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site for “outstanding cultural value.”
